Brief History

The Black Watch was a junior marching and maneuvering corps based in Willingboro, New Jersey founded in 1966.  2016 marked Black Watch's 50th Golden Anniversary!

The corps won the Eastern States Circuit championship in 1980, under the direction of John Wolfrom. A year earlier the corps won DCI Class A and DCI Canada Class A. The corps appeared in Eastern States competition 11 times with the last in 1981. Black Watch always "floored" a competitive indoor colorguard team during the winter and spring months and around 1970 John and his wife Claudette were at the helm of the Black Watch corps and colorguard programs.

After the corps went inactive Claudette continued directing the indoor colorguard, now based out of Mount Laurel, and in the late 1980's the team began participating in Winter Guard International (WGI).  In 1991 the Black Watch earned a bronze medal at World Championships and was promoted to the Open Class.  Again in 1999 they earned a bronze medal and were promoted this time to the World Class.  Since that time the Black Watch has appeared in WGI's Independent World Class finals 12 times and has been a semi-finalist four times.  They have been Tournament Indoor Association's Independent World Class Champions for over two decades.  In the summer of 2013 Black Watch was invited to audition their program "Dia de los Muertos" for America's Got Talent, however they did not make it past the first round.  In 2015 The Black Watch participated alongside 9 other teams to create an exciting and new musical and film project led by artist David Byrne called Contemporary Color.  This concert series was performed in June of 2015 at the Air Canada Center in Toronto and the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn to sold out crowds.

The Black Watch is proud to boast many talented alum and former staff from its drum corps and indoor colorguard years serving in many successful roles with various programs around the world.  For her 50 years of dedication and service to the marching arts in southern New Jersey and nationally Claudette Wolfrom has been inducted into the New Jersey drum corps hall of fame alongside her husband, the National Judges Association hall of fame and has been recognized by TIA at their Chapter 1 and All-Chapter Championships. Sadly, in September of 2019 Claudette Wolfrom passed away.
